Fort Belvoir Demographics

Fort Belvoir Demographics

Fort Belvoir is home to two Army major command headquarters, as well as 10 Army major commands, 19 different agencies of the Department of Army, eight elements of the U.S. Army Reserve and the Army National Guard, and 26 DoD agencies. Also located on Fort Belvoir are a U.S. Navy construction battalion, a Marine Corps detachment, a U.S. Air Force activity, and an agency from the Department of the Treasury. Over 2,000 military families live on Fort Belvoir. Fort Belvoir also supports a larger population living within a 15-mile radius of the post--5,093 active duty military personnel, 20,000 retired military personnel, 1,441 spouses of active duty, and 6,529 civilian employees.

Fort Belvoir houses tenants from all armed forces, as well as such Department of Defense agencies as the Defense Systems Management College and the Defense Mapping School. To carry out this mission effectively, Fort Belvoir has evolved from a traditional military installation to a more broadly based community. Today, Fort Belvoir functions in many ways like a small city, with its own ordinances, land use plan, building codes, utilities, public parks, and academic institutions.

Business operations on Fort Belvoir (in millions) included 1.1 million visitors to the Fort Belvoir commissary, and 1.8 million visits to the Post Exchange.

The average military household income is $54,329, nine percent higher than the average U.S. civilian household.
