Forms for MWR Customers

The Department of the Army has instituted a tracking system for Morale, Welfare and Recreation to better serve our customers. If you and your family members desire to use any of our MWR facilities, please complete the following application forms. Form #1 provides information on your household and Form #2 provides details on what interests you and your family. We make happy campers! The Fort Belvoir Outdoor Recreation Program offers a long list of outdoor recreation equipment for rent at modest per-day rates. This is your one-stop rental facility for all your recreation needs . The outdoor equipment rental shop can supply you with gear for both winter and summer seasons. Call or come on down and check out our value pricing.



ODR is now renting their brand new canoes and kayaks!
Prices are as follows:
Single Kayak: $12 for half day, $14 daily, $ 40 Weekend Fri-Mon.
Tandem Kayak: $14 for half day, $28 daily, $44 Weekend Fri-Mon.
Canoe: $14 for half day, $28 daily, $44 Weekend Fri-Mon.
Prices include life preserver and car top carrier if needed. Also, Outdoor Recreation has a specific boat launching site on Tompkins Basin near the Outdoor Rec., building 778. For more information or to rent equipment, call 703-805-3081.


Two New Party Rental Spots!
Outdoor Recreation now has two new pavilions, the Eagle Pavilion and the Osprey Pavilion, for rent at Tompkins Basin on the Potomac River. Reserve your function in one or both of the pavilions for an introductory fee of $25 each per day and a $50 refundable cleaning deposit. Each 20’x30’ pavilion has picnic tables, a BBQ grill and volleyball nets. Volleyballs and other recreational items are available for rent at the Outdoor Recreation Center, Bldg 778. Dog Park Now Open
Fort Belvoir Outdoor Recreation’s dog park will be open full time from dawn to dusk, seven days a week and is free of charge! For more information see the attached flyer.

Boat Launching at Tompkins Basin
Non-motorized boat launching is authorized at Tomkins Basin. See Boat Launch Map. Prior to launching, boaters must register at Outdoor Recreation, bldg. 778. Call 703-805-3081 for information.

Fishing License requirements for Fort Belvoir:
Ages 16 and above only require a Virginia State fishing license and a Freshwater license. Licenses are available at all local Wal-marts.

Hiking Group
Interested in hiking with a group or maybe with your pooch? Join Fort Belvoir Outdoor Recreation's Hiking Interest Group and explore nearby Hiking areas in Northern Virginia and Maryland! For more information please call 703-3081/1488.

Interested in Bird Watching?
Whether you’re interested in observing or learning to identify different birds, join Outdoor Recreation’s Bird Watching Interest Group. The group will travel to observe and identify the wild birds of Virginia and Maryland in their natural habitat. Whether it’s the beauty of birds or their power of flight that intrigues you join us on a walk to discover our local Bird Population. Phone # for more info 703-805-3081.


Connecting with Nature & Wildlife on Fort Belvoir
Come Explore and Experience Fort Belvoir’s own Wildlife Sanctuary. One Sunday of each month Outdoor Recreation will join with Environmental to explore a part of the Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge. Each hike will have a focus and an environmental lesson. Call Outdoor Recreation for details about each hike 703-805-3081.

The Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge was established in 1980 and includes over 1,315 acres of marsh and hardwood forest in the southwestern corner of the post. The plan is to explore and experience the nine miles of public trails that wind through the 1,315-acre refuge during the winter and early spring.

The Hike is Free with a Corresponding Pocket Guide. Call to sign-up and reserve your spot; each hike will be limited to 20 people.

Family Camp Outs on Belvoir
Looking for a fun camping experience with your family? Then grab your camping gear and join Outdoor Recreation for a camp out. Families are invited to pitch their tents on the spacious field next to the Outdoor Recreation building and sleep under the stars! This family campout is a great opportunity for everyone to re-live the camping experience. During the day go fishing, take archery, join a scavenger hunt with prizes, and hike along the Accotink Bay. The cost is $5 per person which includes a tent space, fishing clinic, an archery lesson, a scavenger hunt, sporting equipment, and s’mores over an outdoor fire pit. One extra large charcoal grill will be provided for community grilling and three fire pits for roasting marshmallows. All you are responsible for is your tent, a sleeping bag, camping supplies, food and water.

If you do not already have your own camping equipment or know what you need come to Outdoor Recreation and they will be able assist you. Outdoor Recreation has all of the camping equipment you will need for great rental prices. Come to Outdoor Recreation to pay and reserve your tent space. 84th Annual Pony Swim & Auction
Enjoy a 3 night camping trip to Chincoteague Island, Virginia to experience the 2009 Pony Swim, Auction, and Carnival.

Dates and Times:
12pm July 28th - 6pm July 30th

Trip Cost:
$40 per person includes camping site at Tom’s Cove Campground for 3 nights, transportation, and opportunity to have fun at the Chincoteague Firemen’s Carnival, Pony Swim, and the Pony Auction.  Outdoor Recreation will also provide any camping equipment you need at no extra cost for this trip.

Tuesday July 28th
12pm: Leave Outdoor Recreation for Chincoteague Island, Virginia
4pm: Arrive at Tom’s Cove Campground & Set-Up Camp
6pm: Dinner & Carnival & Updated Time of Pony Swim will be Announced

Wednesday July 29th Pony Swim Day
7am - 1pm: Ponies Swim Assateague Channel at Chincoteague Memorial Park
1:30pm: Time to Explore Chincoteague Island, Assateague Island Beach, and Play at the Carnival

Thursday July 30th
8am -12pm: Pony Penning & Auction of Ponies
1pm: Leave Chincoteague Island, VA
6pm: Arrive back at Fort Belvoir

Come to Outdoor Recreation to pay and reserve your spot on the MWR Bus for this fun and exciting once in a lifetime experience. Reservations must be made by July 10, 2009. Half day rides into George Washington National Forest
$95.00/person (includes lunch)
Full day rides to the highest peak in the area w/ spectacular views $135.00/person (includes lunch)

Limited to 14 people per trip due to the size of bus. For your safety, the weight limit is 240 pounds. We cannot accept riders younger than 10 years old for our half and full day rides.

Outdoor Recreation's Friday Evening Getaway Sailing Socials
Want to learn how to sail in a social & fun environment? Then join us once a month on Friday nights to learn how to sail with a group
instructor in Baltimore, Maryland's Inner Harbor. Sail 5:30pm - Sunset. No sailing experience is necessary each boat has one instructor onboard. You can participate and sail as much (or as little and just relax) as you would like. All of the boats can accommodate up to 5 guests and 1 instructor. Gateway Sailing encourages people to make this a fun event - so bringing food, snacks, drinks, etc.! The boats sail until sunset! Cost is $42 per person includes sailing until sunset, onboard instruction & transportation.

Manbird Flight School Hang Gliding Classes
Want to experience flight like birds? Come join us for a one of a kind hang gliding experience. Hang Gliding Ground School will prepare you for a great flying session! First you will Participate in Ground School which includes learning the fundamentals of flight and the flying environment, an introduction to flight simulator exercises and experience ground handling a hang glider with a helmet and harness. After completing ground school you are ready
to fly... you will be instructed on a Condor and then towed with a
Scootertow. Scootertow is the latest and easiest way of teaching hang gliding and the safest and easiest way to learn for beginners.

Class time is 8:00am - 12:00pm (afternoon session available for advanced flying instructions). Cost to participate is $125.00.
Transportation is not provided. Option to Carpool is Available.
Classes will take place at E. Calvin Van Dyck Park in the City of
Fairfax, VA. Classes are limited to 8 participants. Sign-up by the Wednesday prior to each class.

Fishing Trips to Solomon's Island Maryland
Join us on a 6 hour fishing trip into the Chesapeake Bay. The fishing trip will depart from Outdoor Recreation at 11:00am and will return around 9:00pm with the fresh fish caught that day. Cost is $85.00 per person. Come by Outdoor Recreation to sign up and pay for your spot on this Fishing Charter! We are looking forward to fishing with you!

Grand Canyon Hiking Trip
Outdoor Recreation, in conjunction with REI, is offering a “once in a lifetime” hiking trip in a small but beautiful area of the Grand Canyon. See the attached flyer for all the details on this exciting trip!


The Fort Belvoir MWR Archery and Hunting Programs have been cited as model programs and received attention in both local and national hunting publications. These facilities represent the most complete archery complex in Virginia and possibly anywhere. All facilities are in top condition and are rated a "Four Star Facility by The National Field Archery Association and The Virginia Bowhunters Association." These facilities are maintained by MWR Range Volunteers. Youth, Adult and Scout Archery Instruction is conducted by Certified NFAA Advanced Level Instructors on these ranges, during specific periods. International Bowhunter Education Program Classes are also conducted in the Archery Center Classroom, by Certified IBEP Instructors in support of the Fort Belvoir Bowhunting Program. Bowhunters interested in deer and turkey hunting on the Post are required to have completed a State Hunting Safety Course, an IBEP Course and to qualify by demonstrating an archery proficiency test with broadhead arrows. An annual qualification fee is charged to interested hunters and remains active for participation during the Spring Gobbler season. All appropriate Virginia licenses are also required.

Facility Features

The Fort Belvoir MWR Archery Center Operates with:
- One 14 Point Standard Outdoor NFAA Field Archery Course.
- One 25 Point Outdoor 3D Animal Target Range. Targets are placed on this range for specific competitions.
- One eight Point Outdoor Lighted Practice Range with targets at 10,15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 yards.
- One four Point Outdoor Broadhead Practice Range with 20 and 30 yard lines and a 16 foot Practice Tower.
- One 18 Point NFAA Indoor 20 yd Practice Range with Block Targets and an official time clock.
- One 10 Point Indoor 15 to 45 yard Practice Range which includes a three point broadhead qualification and practice target.
- One three Point Interactive Range with a variety of realistic computer driven hunting scenarios.
- An Official Virginia Check Station for Deer and Turkey Season.

Hunting Council
The Hunting Council is temporarily operating on a limited basis and meetings will only be held when deemed necessary. The Hunting Council Minutes will be updated when meetings are held.
