Accreditation

The School Age Services program has been accredited by NSACA (National School Age Child Care Association)!

What is the NSACA Accreditation? I'm glad you asked! It is a system based on a method of self-study and program improvements. The system was developed through collaboration between the National School Age Care Alliance and The National Institute on Out of School Time. Some school age programs have used the National Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation system, which was developed for Early Childhood programs. There are definitely unique characteristics about school age care. This system helps to raise awareness about the importance of out of school time for our children and youth.

The NSACA standards for Quality School Age Care offer 6 keys, which each key has, 4 standards. The 6 keys are: Human Relations, Indoor and Outdoor Environments, Administration, Safety, Health, & Nutrition, and Activities.

In order to achieve accreditation the program must first prepare the staff by informing them with the standards and introducing the information to the community. Then an ASQ (Advancing School Age Quality) team is developed consisting of active parents, the Center Director, a Training & Program Specialist(me), and/or anyone else who may be affiliated with the program. The ASQ team will conduct observation of the program at various times. In the meantime, questionnaires and questionnaires and then some more questionnaires are distributed to the parents, children, and staff. Once all is compiled an action plan is developed and implemented to improve the program accordingly. When the program feels they have made the necessary improvements the questionnaires are redistributed and once again compiled for results. The ASQ team re-conducts their observations 2 month prior to submitting the application for an Endorser to come and visit the site. An Endorser will visit the program conducting observations and reviewing various documents and files. The program will be notified by mail whether the program has been deferred or accredited. In a nut shell, this is the NSACA Accreditation process.

Staff

All staff must complete national and local background checks. Staff must also complete required training in First Aid, CPR, Child Abuse Prevention, and the 13 Army Child Development Training Modules to reach their target level pay grade. Once the target level as been completed, 24 annual training credits are required. In addition to the mandatory training, 18 South Post staff members have completed their Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials.

Parent Participation

Parent participation is highly encouraged in all CYSS programs, and is actually necessary for some activities to be successful. There would not be a Sports program without the dedication of volunteer coaches. Some ways parents participate in child care programs may include eating lunch with their child and participating in various room activities (prior arrangements must be made with your child's teacher). Parent Advisory Boards (PAB's) operate at all the Centers and are open to all parents. Through the PAB, parents provide valuable input to the programs in which their children spend a significant portion of their day. To encourage parent participation, the "Why I'm Needed" (WIN) program allows parents to earn points through volunteering opportunities at the centers, or attending parenting classes through the Family Advocacy Program.

The WIN Program: This is a special program that enables parents to earn up to a 10% discount on their 1st child's monthly child care fees at the CDC or SAS. Parents perform essential tasks for the CDC or SAS and earn a specific number of discount points. Each discount point is worth 1 percent each up to a maximum of 10 discount points which is 10%. These discount points may then be applied towards child care fee. Check with the CDC or SAS front desk staff for more information.

Eligibility

Eligibility to use CYSS programs include active duty military personnel, DoD civilian personnel, reservists on active duty for 72 hours or more, and DoD contractors working on Fort Belvoir. Military retirees are only eligible for our sports programs and our free Middle School and Teens program. Because child care programs are offered for the sponsor to report to work so that the Army can meet its mission, eligibility to use Fort Belvoir child care programs ends upon End Term of Service (ETS) of sponsor, termination of sponsor's DoD employment or DoD contractor's employment on Fort Belvoir. A thirty-day grace period is authorized to find alternate care. All patrons must register with Parent Central Services (Resource and Referral - Central Registration). The Parent Central Services (Resource and Referral - Central Registration) phone numbers are (703) 806-0791.
