Summer Recap and New Tee Times
Dear Members, Friends and all of our highly valued Customers,
The month of July did not vary from its historical behavior; it was a very hot month. The high temperatures took their toll on the Gunston and Woodlawn courses. Many of the greens were weakened by the extreme temperatures, but they all remain viable and green and healthy, except for some isolated incidences of goose grass weed invasion, all of our greens offer very good playing conditions. Our fairways are thriving, and the majority of our tee boxes, although weakened along with the greens by the July heat, came through the summer remarkably well. I do believe that all of our tees’ condition generally is the best that we all have witnessed over the past several golf seasons.
Marty our Superintendent, and Tony the assistant Superintendent, and all of the staff they lead, have worked extremely hard over this past month trying to keep the golf courses alive, let alone trying to maintain acceptable playing conditions. They succeeded at both through the month of July and they succeeded with a team that was severely understaffed. I am amazed at their very successful accomplishments.
Mr. Steve Greiner, our Head Golf Professional, leads a very talented and knowledgeable and helpful staff in our Pro Shop and the staff extends to or includes all who service the golf cart fleet and the driving range. This group along with all of the team has endured some severe challenges as well and they have all responded and delivered in very fine fashion.
I also acknowledge the fine job exhibited by our Dining Room staff, our Kitchen staff, and our Lounge/Bar staff this entire golf season. This team is ably lead by Bob Malkowski and ably assisted by Ron Deeb and our very qualified and accomplished Chef Carlton Johnson. Bob and his entire team have worked very hard to produce excellent service and excellent food quality throughout this golf season. Bob and his staff too, has performed well while being challenged at times with less than the full complement of the team.
A very important partner in the golf operation is the team members directly responsible for assisting our golfer to the first tee. Hank Schwoebel has lead a very accomplished team of play coordinators (starters) throughout this golf season and over at least the past 20 years. Hank and his team are also an extremely vital part of the golf club that always help to assure that all of our customers enjoy the golf courses.
Ms. Joyce Lee and Ms. Asni Menberu are another vital and key component of all that we do. They are extremely helpful to all of our golfers and our dining customers on a very consistent basis every day. They are extremely important in assisting our financial affairs of the club and keeping things organized so that we (all of the golf club staff) are portrayed in a positive and helpful manner.
This season has been difficult and our team has responded very eagerly and I am extremely grateful to all of them for all of their efforts. Their hard work is one way that they are saying thank you to all the military folks we feel honored to serve.
We are entering our 2nd growing season very soon and fall golf is outstanding in Virginia. In order for us to provide all of our valued customers the very best golf course conditions, we have events scheduled very soon that will allow us to fulfill our promises to you.
Please note the following:
THE FIRST TEE TIME CHANGES TO 0730 ON SATURDAY, 27 AUGUST.
Starting August 27, the first tee time is 0730 every day Sunday through Saturday.

We also have this work scheduled the following week September 12 through 16. If weather cooperates we may finish all course maintenance before the 16th.

Monday July 25, 2011 Water Shut Off Letter
Dear Golfer Members and Friends,
All on-course restrooms on Woodlawn and Gunston golf courses will be out of service on Monday, 25 July. Water will be turned off to allow for repair of three breaks in the fresh water supply line that crosses holes on the Gunston golf course. Unfortunately shutting off the water affects all on-course restrooms.
Woodlawn Golf Course will be open but the restroom will not be in service.
Gunston Golf Course will be closed on Monday.
Please accept our apology for affecting service on the golf courses. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Sincerely,
Jeff

Golf Club 2011 Season Welcome Letter
Downloadable PDF Version of Announcement
Dear Golfer Members and Friends,
On behalf of the entire golf club staff, I wish to invite you to please consider joining or renewing your
membership at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club for the 2011/2012 golf season. The golf club is open every day of the
year with the exception of certain holidays and weather conditions.
There have been concerns expressed by our members that Museum construction might or will interfere with
the golf course this golf season, our response:
We are guaranteeing that the Fort Belvoir Golf Club will have 36 golf holes in play for the entire golf
year which begins April 1, 2011 and ends March 31, 2012. We are pleased to announce that all annual
green fees (Golf Member) and daily green fees will stay the same as last year’s fees. New Golf
Members will enjoy a 10% discount off the published annual fees for the 2011/2012 golf season.
Sign up for golf membership at the Administration offices in the golf clubhouse. We will begin accepting
membership renewals and purchases of annual memberships starting Saturday, March 5, and all Saturdays in
March, from 7:00 to 3:00. Beginning Monday, March 7, annual memberships may be renewed and/or
purchased every Monday – Friday, from 9:00-5:00.
As a Member in 2011 you will receive:
1. Golf Member (Annual Patron) golf cart fees. These are reduced cart fees for all golf members.
2. Golf Members receive discounted fees on all Fort Belvoir Golf Club tournaments.
3. Golf Members enjoy advance tee times; a pin number (no charge for Pin numbers) is required and is
available when you register for membership and is also available in the golf Pro Shop to all daily
golfers. Pin numbers expire and must be renewed every year. All Members and active duty nonmember
golfers with pin numbers continue to call for tee times 4 days in advance. All golfers with pin
numbers may reserve tee times 2 days out.
For the 2011/2012 golf year all new golf members will receive a 10% discount. A “new” member is anyone
who was not a member for the 2010/2011 golf year.
Special offer to all our golf members: for each new member that you sponsor, we will award you with 10 free
cart fees. This award is valued at $160. To take advantage of this offer we ask that the sponsoring member
introduce their “new” member to our Administration staff when this person is prepared to purchase their golf
membership. The sponsor member will receive the 10 free cart fees after the club receives the annual fee
payment from the “new” member.
Our golf course maintenance staff has been very busy over the past few months preparing the greens, tees,
and fairways for the coming spring. We are very confident that you all will notice a definite improvement in golf
course playing conditions when the season finally arrives.
Please consider and allow us to welcome you back to your “Fort Belvoir Golf Club”!
Sincerely,
Jeff

Fall Course Turf Maintenance
Dear Members and all Golfers of Fort Belvoir Golf Club,
Please be reminded that we are conducting our scheduled fall course turf
maintenance and that many of the greens have been aerated and top
dressed.
You will notice that not all of the holes in the greens are filled with
sand. We will eventually get all of the holes on the greens filled, but
it will take additional time to complete. More top dressing applications
will be done over time and during cooler temperatures to avoid further
harm to the grass plant.
We will be repairing 2 greens on Gunston and 6 greens on Woodlawn
starting on Monday, 20 September.
The repair that is planned involves removing existing turf from the
entire green and then replacing with L-93 sod that is cut at green
height (3/16 inches).
This repair will require these greens to be put out of play.
Temporary greens and the possible closing of some holes for the
following 3 to 6 weeks will be necessary to allow for complete recovery
of these greens.
Weather will determine the time it will take before we can put these
greens back into play.
We will be doing some thinning of underbrush in the tree lines around
all of the greens that will be repaired.
We will be removing some trees around the greens that will be repaired.
We have received approval to do projects that are necessary to improve the environment where we are growing golf course grass for tees, greens and fairways. One of these projects that will be performed involve more tree removal and thinning of underbrush over the next few months and into the winter on both golf courses. These measures are being done to improve the growing conditions which will help improve the health of the greens, tees and fairways over time.
The tree and underbrush thinning and removal is being done to provide greens, tees, and fairways access to morning sunshine and to provide channels for air flow. We have had a very remarkable golf season and one for the record books for sure. Over 60 days of temperatures exceeding 90 degrees, and below normal rainfall beginning in April and continuing to this date. Currently the golf course is on day 23 without any rain. Our goal is to improve golf course conditions for the rest of this season, and for the next golf season and to maintain and improve conditions for all of the seasons to follow. We have received approval to do this and this also means that we have received approval to spend additional dollars to accomplish the improvements. On behalf of the entire golf club staff we sincerely appreciate your support of the golf club throughout this season; while enduring less than ideal turf conditions on the golf courses.
Sincerely,
Jeff
