Kawamura Community Center

How Did We Get Our Name?

The Kawamura Arts & Crafts Center is named in honor of Corporal Terry T. Kawamura. On 20 March 1969, his unit was defending against close enemy attack in Vietnam. During the battle, Corporal Kawamura hurled his body onto an explosive charge thrown by the enemy, in order to save the lives of two comrades in the 173rd Engineer Company. For this action, Corporal Kawamura was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by the President in the name of The Congress. Years later, the Kawamura Community Arts & Crafts Center was named in his honor.

Terry Kawamura entered the US Army from Hawaii on 27 September 1967. After completing basic training, he received Engineer Advanced Individual Training (AIT) and Airborne Training. Following a short tour of duty with the 82nd Airborne Division in August 1968, he was assigned to the 173rd Engineering Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam.

Corporal Kawamura, was born, on 10 December 1949, in Wahiawa, Oahu, Hawaii. Terry Kawamura entered the US Army before his 18th birthday and died before his 20th birthday.
